Significance of Milestones

Hi Friends!

This past month, I had the honor of speaking at “Her Song”, here in jacksonville! As a member of the board, it was a sweet opportunity to speak with the team and the women in the program. The event is called “Celebration of Milestones” because we never want it to feel as if anyone had “graduated” from our family. But rather just took another step forward.

When I started to prepare for this speech God gave me a word to share, and I thought it would be really useful for all of us!

You see, in high school, I used to love being active, one of my favorite sports was running track. I remember when I used to run on that track field, every couple meters I went; yes, I said meters. I am from South Africa so our milestones are truly  “meterstone”… every marker that I would come up on would serve as a reminder that I had come a little further than I was before.

A goal defines where we are going, but a milestone is a reminder that  we are actually achieving that goal. It gives us reasons to celebrate the progress along the way. This brought  me to a passage in Deuteronomy where Moses tells the second generation of Israelites to actually go and set up a physical ‘milestone,’ to remind them where God had brought them from and what He’s called them to (Deu. 27:2-4). Furthermore, when you take a look at the whole book of Deuteronomy, you’ll find that 22 times Moses tells the ancient people to ‘remember’ and to ‘not forget’ what the Lord has done for them.

You see, God honors the small steps; he sees them all and reminds us to recall them as we move forward. It is important to celebrate the small wins just as much as the large ones. There are obstacles that we will all have to overcome but listen, you did not come this far to only come this far. You came this far because of a reason, because of a purpose.

My hope is that this encourages you in whatever season you are in. God loves you and has a perfect plan and purpose for your life.
